The Civil War Revisited in Quilts

This is a sampler quilt (28 different blocks); designs used during the Civil War era. Each block has been carefully researched as to date and the meaning behind the block. Quilters were involved in the historic events of the time and recorded these events in their quilts.

There are seven different sets of patterns, each with four different blocks in the same theme.

Pattern 1: Life in the 1860's
(The music, the dance and the crafts)

Pattern 2: The legends, the folklore and the personalities
(The stories, rhetoric and the involvement of individual Americans)

Pattern 3: The statesmen and the politics of war
(How leaders and their political involvement influenced historic events)

Pattern 4: The Union
(These designs illustrate Northerner's efforts to maintain the basic structure of the country)

Pattern 5: The Confederacy
(Southern ideology of state's rights and the preservation of the Southern way of life)

Pattern 6: The Battlefield
(Designs dedicated to those who served in the conflict)

Pattern 7: War in the West
(The influences of the war on the western movement)
